Thechildlookedaroundsmilingandthrustitshandsintothepocketsofthepajamas.Closeafteritcameabigrubberbear,walkingerectonitshindfeet.Thebearhadtwinklingblackeyes,anditsbodylookedasifithadbeenpumpedfullofair.
Followingthesecuriousvisitorsweretwotall,thinmenandtwoshort,fatmen,allfourdressedingorgeousuniforms.
Ozma’sHighChamberlainnowhurriedforwardtoannouncethenamesofthenewarrivals,callingoutinaloudvoice:
"HisGraciousandMostEdibleMajesty,KingDoughtheFirst,RuleroftheTwoKingdomsofHilandandLoland.AlsotheHeadBoolywagofhisMajesty,knownasChicktheCherub,andtheirfaithfulfriendParaBruin,therubberbear."
Thesegreatpersonagesbowedlowastheirnameswerecalled,andDorothyhastenedtointroducethemtotheassembledcompany.Theywerethefirstforeignarrivals,andthefriendsofPrincessOzmawerepolitetothemandtriedtomakethemfeelthattheywerewelcome.
ChicktheCherubshookhandswitheveryone,includingBillina,andwassojoyousandfrankandfullofgoodspiritsthatJohnDough’sHeadBooleywagatoncebecameaprimefavorite.
"Isitaboyoragirl?"whisperedDorothy.
"Don’tknow,"saidButton-Bright.
"Goodnessme!whataqueerlotofpeopleyouare,"exclaimedtherubberbear,lookingattheassembledcompany.
