ValleyRoadprayer-meetingsseemedtobeessentiallyfeminine.Therewerethirty-twowomenpresent,twohalf-grownboys,andonesolitaryman,besidetheminister.Annefoundherselfstudyingthisman.Hewasnothandsomeoryoungorgraceful;hehadremarkablylonglegs—solongthathehadtokeepthemcoiledupunderhischairtodisposeofthem—andhewasstoop-shouldered.Hishandswerebig,hishairwantedbarbering,andhismoustachewasunkempt.ButAnnethoughtshelikedhisface;itwaskindandhonestandtender;therewassomethingelseinit,too—justwhat,Annefoundithardtodefine.Shefinallyconcludedthatthismanhadsufferedandbeenstrong,andithadbeenmademanifestinhisface.Therewasasortofpatient,humorousenduranceinhisexpressionwhichindicatedthathewouldgotothestakeifneedbe,butwouldkeeponlookingpleasantuntilhereallyhadtobeginsquirming.
