Suchaspeechfromninety-ninepeopleoutofahundredwouldhaveannoyedAnnebitterly;butthewayinwhichMr.Douglassaiditmadeherfeelthatshehadreceivedaveryrealandpleasingcompliment.Shesmiledappreciativelyathimanddroppedobliginglybehindonthemoonlitroad.
SoJanethadabeau!Annewasdelighted.Janetwouldmakeaparagonofawife—cheery,economical,tolerant,andaveryqueenofcooks.ItwouldbeaflagrantwasteonNature’sparttokeepherapermanentoldmaid.

Anneassented;butlaterinthedayMr.Douglascalledonhismother’sbehalftoinvitethemuptoteaonSaturdayevening.
