“Towhomareyoureferring?”Iaskedcoldly,andretiredtothebilliard-room,whereIplayedacapitalgame.
ItookpainstoshowWilliamthatIhadforgottenhismaunderings,butIobservedthegirlnightly,andonce,insteadofnodding,sheshookherhead,andthateveningIcouldnotgetintoapocket.NexteveningtherewasnoWilliaminthedining-room,andIthoughtIknewwhathadhappened.But,chancingtoenterthelibraryrathermiserably,Iwassurprisedtoseehimonaladderdustingbooks.Wehadtheroompracticallytoourselves,forthoughseveralmemberssatonchairsholdingbooksintheirhandstheywereallasleep,andWilliamdescendedtheladdertotellmehisblastingtale.Hehadswornatamember!
