ThelowhousesofLondonlooksomuchmorehomelythanthetallonesthatIneverpassthemwithoutdroppingablessingontheirbuilders,butthishousewasridiculous;indeeditdidnotcallitselfahouse,foroverthedoorwasaboardwiththeinscription“Thisspacetobesold,”andIremembered,asIrangthebell,thatthisnoticehadbeenupforyears.OnavowingthatIwantedaspace,Iwasadmittedbyanelderly,somewhatdejectedlookingfemale,whosefinefigurewasnotonscalewithhersurroundings.Perhapsmyfacesaidso,forherfirstremarkwasexplanatory.
