           WithwreckedislandsIdidit.Ibeganinthemostunpretentiouswaybytellingthemastorywhichmightlastanhour,andfavouredbymanyanunexpectedwinditlastedeighteenmonths.ItstartedasthewreckofthesimpleSwissfamilywholookedupandsawthebuttertree,butsoonagloriousinspirationofthenightturneditintothewreckofDavidAandOliverBailey.Atfirstitwaswhattheyweretodowhentheywerewrecked,butimperceptiblyitbecamewhattheyhaddone.Ispentmuchofmytimestaringreflectivelyatthetitlesoftheboys’storiesinthebooksellers’windows,whistlingforabreeze,sotosay,forIfoundthatthetitleswereevenmorehelpfulthanthestories.Wewreckedeverybodyofnote,includingallHomer’smosttakingcharactersandtheheroofParadiseLost.Butwesufferedthemnottoland.Westrippedthemofwhatwewantedandleftthemtowanderthehighseasnakedofadventure.Andallthiswasmerelythebeginning.

           BythistimeIhadbeencastupontheisland.Itwasnotmyownproposal,butDavidknewmywishes,andhemadeitallrightformewithOliver.Theyfoundmeamongthebreakerswithalargedog,whichhadkeptmeafloatthroughoutthatterriblenight.Iwasthesolesurvivoroftheill-fatedAnnaPink.
