“Idon’tsaythat,”Maimieansweredpolitely,“ofcourseyourfaceisjustatinybithomely,but—”Reallyitwasquiteawkwardforher.
Fortunatelysherememberedaboutherfatherandthebazaar.HehadgonetoafashionablebazaarwhereallthemostbeautifulladiesinLondonwereonviewforhalf-a-crownthesecondday,butonhisreturnhomeinsteadofbeingdissatisfiedwithMaimie’smotherhehadsaid,“Youcan’tthink,mydear,whatareliefitistoseeahomelyfaceagain.”
Maimierepeatedthisstory,anditfortifiedBrownietremendously,indeedshehadnolongertheslightestdoubtthattheDukewouldchooseher.
