Ofcourse,hehadneverseenahoop,andhewonderedwhatyouplayatwiththem,anddecidedthatyouplayatpretendingtheyareboats.Thishoopalwayssankatonce,buthewadedinforit,andsometimeshedraggeditgleefullyroundtherimofthepond,andhewasquiteproudtothinkthathehaddiscoveredwhatboysdowithhoops.
Anothertime,whenhefoundachild’spail,hethoughtitwasforsittingin,andhesatsohardinitthathecouldscarcelygetoutofit.Alsohefoundaballoon.ItwasbobbingaboutontheHump,quiteasifitwashavingagamebyitself,andhecaughtitafteranexcitingchase.Buthethoughtitwasaball,andJennyWrenhadtoldhimthatboyskickballs,sohekickedit;andafterthathecouldnotfinditanywhere.
Perhapsthemostsurprisingthinghefoundwasaperambulator.Itwasunderalime-tree,neartheentrancetotheFairyQueen’sWinterPalace(whichiswithinthecircleofthesevenSpanishchestnuts),andPeterapproacheditwarily,forthebirdshadnevermentionedsuchthingstohim.Lestitwasalive,headdresseditpolitely,andthen,asitgavenoanswer,hewentnearerandfeltitcautiously.Hegaveitalittlepush,anditranfromhim,whichmadehimthinkitmustbealiveafterall;but,asithadrunfromhim,hewasnotafraid.Sohestretchedouthishandtopullittohim,butthistimeitranathim,andhewassoalarmedthatheleapttherailingandscuddedawaytohisboat
