           Thentherewasthatsuggestionofoddstirrings. Nothingwasopen,yetinspiteofthegeneraldraughtlessnessJonesfeltthattheairwasnotuniformlyquiet. Therewereintangiblevariationsinpressurenotquitedecidedenoughtosuggesttheloathsomepawingsofunseenelementals. Itwasabnormallychilly,too. Hedidnotlikeanyofthis. Theairtastedsalty,asifitweremixedwiththebrineofdarksubterrenewaters,andtherewasabarehintofsomeodourofineffablemustiness. Inthedaytimehehadnevernoticedthatthewaxenfigureshadanodour. Evennowthathalf-receivedhintwasnotthewaywaxfiguresoughttosmell.Itwasmorelikethefaintsmellofspecimensinanatural-historymuseum. Curious,inviewofRogers’claimsthathisfigureswerenotallartificialindeed,itwasprobablythatclaimwhichmadeone’simaginationconjureuptheolfactorysuspicion. OnemustguardagainstexcessesoftheimaginationhadnotsuchthingsdrivenpoorRogersmad?
