           ItwaslanguidcuriositywhichfirstbroughtStephenJonestoRogers’Museum. SomeonehadtoldhimaboutthequeerundergroundplaceinSouthwarkStreetacrosstheriver,wherewaxenthingssomuchmorehorriblethantheworsteffigiesatMadameTussaud’swereshewn,andhehadstrolledinoneAprildaytoseehowdisappointinghewouldfindit. Oddly,hewasnotdisappointed. Therewassomethingdifferentanddistinctivehere,afterall. Ofcourse,theusualgorycommonplaceswerepresentLandru,Dr.Crippen,MadameDemers,Rizzio,LadyJaneGrey,endlessmaimedvictimsofwarandrevolution,andmonsterslikeGillesdeRaisandMarquisdeSadebuttherewereotherthingswhichhadmadehimbreathefasterandstaytilltheringingoftheclosingbell. Themanwhohadfashionedthiscollectioncouldbenoordinarymountebank. Therewasimaginationevenakindofdiseasedgeniusinsomeofthisstuff.
