           Therewerelumpishhybridthingswhichonlyfantasycouldspawn,mouldedwithdevilishskill,andcolouredinahorriblylife-likefashion. 

           Somewerethefiguresofwell-knownmythgorgons,chimaeras,dragons,cyclops,andalltheirshuddersomecongeners. Othersweredrawnfromdarkerandmorefurtivelywhisperedcyclesofsubterraneanlegendblack,formlessTsathoggua,many-tentacledCthulhu,proboscidianChaugnarFaugn,andotherrumouredblasphemiesfromforbiddenbooksliketheNecronomicon,theBookofEibon,ortheUnaussprechlichenKultenofvonJunzt. ButtheworstwerewhollyoriginalwithRogers,andrepresentedshapeswhichnotaleofantiquityhadeverdaredtosuggest. Severalwerehideousparodiesonformsoforganiclifeweknow,whileothersseemedtakenfromfeverishdreamsofotherplanetsandothergalaxies. ThewilderpaintingsofClarkAshtonSmithmightsuggestafewbutnothingcouldsuggesttheeffectofpoignant,loathsometerrorcreatedbytheirgreatsizeandfiendishlycunningworkmanship,andbythediabolicallycleverlightingconditionsunderwhichtheywereexhibited. 

           StephenJones,asaleisurelyconnoisseurofthebizarreinart,hadsoughtoutRogershimselfinthedingyofficeandworkroombehindthevaultedmuseumchamberanevil-lookingcryptlighteddimlybydustywindowssetslit-likeandhorizontalinthebrickwallonalevelwiththeancientcobblestonesofahiddencourtyard. Itwasherethattheimageswererepairedhere,too,wheresomeofthemhadbeenmade.
