           AboutthemiddleofJanuary,1920,thereenteredWard’sbearinganelementoftriumphwhichhedidnotexplain,andhewasnomorefoundatworkupontheHutchinsoncipher.Instead,heinauguratedadualpolicyofchemicalresearchandrecord-scanning;fittingupfortheonealaboratoryintheunusedatticofthehouse,andforthelatterhauntingallthesourcesofvitalstatisticsinProvidence.Localdealersindrugsandscientificsupplies,laterquestioned,gaveastonishinglyqueerandmeaninglesscataloguesofthesubstancesandinstrumentshepurchased;butclerksattheStateHouse,theCityHall,andthevariouslibrariesagreeastothedefiniteobjectofhissecondinterest.HewassearchingintenselyandfeverishlyforthegraveofJosephCurwen,fromwhoseslateslabanoldergenerationhadsowiselyblottedthename.
