           NowthefirstoddthingaboutJosephCurwenwasthathedidnotseemtogrowmucholderthanhehadbeenonhisarrival.Heengagedinshippingenterprises,purchasedwharfagenearMile-EndCove,helpedrebuildtheGreatBridgein1713,andin1723wasoneofthefoundersoftheCongregationalChurchonthehill;butalwaysdidheretainhisnondescriptaspectofamannotgreatlyoverthirtyorthirty-five.Asdecadesmountedup,thissingularqualitybegantoexcitewidenotice;butCurwenalwaysexplaineditbysayingthathecameofhardyforefathers,andpracticedasimplicityoflivingwhichdidnotwearhimour.
