Imustherespeakbytheoryalone,sayingnotthatwhichIknow,butthatwhichIsupposetobemostprobable. Theevilsideofmynature,towhichIhadnowtransferredthestampingefficacy,waslessrobustandlessdevelopedthanthegoodwhichIhadjustdeposed. Again,inthecourseofmylife,whichhadbeen,afterall,nine-tenthsalifeofeffort,virtue,andcontrol,ithadbeenmuchlessexercisedandmuchlessexhausted. Andhence,asIthink,itcameaboutthatEdwardHydewassomuchsmaller,slighter,andyoungerthanHenryJekyll. Evenasgoodshoneuponthecountenanceoftheone,evilwaswrittenbroadlyandplainlyonthefaceoftheother. Evilbesides(whichImuststillbelievetobethelethalsideofman)hadleftonthatbodyanimprintofdeformityanddecay. AndyetwhenIlookeduponthatuglyidolintheglass,Iwasconsciousofnorepugnance,ratherofaleapofwelcome.
