           Pinocchiolookedathimand,judginghimbyhislookstobeakindman,saidtohimwitheyesdowncastinshame: 

           "Willyoubesogoodastogivemeapenny,forIamfaintwithhunger?" 

           "Notonlyonepenny,"answeredtheCoalMan."I’llgiveyoufourifyouwillhelpmepullthesetwowagons." 

           "Iamsurprised!"answeredtheMarionette,verymuchoffended."IwishyoutoknowthatIneverhavebeenadonkey,norhaveIeverpulledawagon." 

           "Somuchthebetterforyou!"answeredtheCoalMan."Then,myboy,ifyouarereallyfaintwithhunger,eattwoslicesofyourpride;andIhopetheydon’tgiveyouindigestion." 

           Afewminutesafter,aBricklayerpassedby,carryingapailfullofplasteronhisshoulder. 

           "Goodman,willyoubekindenoughtogiveapennytoapoorboywhoisyawningfromhunger?" 

           "Gladly,"answeredtheBricklayer."Comewithmeandcarrysomeplaster,andinsteadofonepenny,I’llgiveyoufive." 

           "Buttheplasterisheavy,"answeredPinocchio,"andtheworktoohardforme." 

           "Iftheworkistoohardforyou,myboy,enjoyyouryawnsandmaytheybringyouluck!" 

           Inlessthanahalfhour,atleasttwentypeoplepassedandPinocchiobeggedofeachone,buttheyallanswered: 

           "Aren’tyouashamed?Insteadofbeingabeggarinthestreets,whydon’tyoulookforworkandearnyourownbread?" 

           Finallyalittlewomanwentbycarryingtwowaterjugs. 

           "Goodwoman,willyouallowmetohaveadrinkfromoneofyourjugs?"askedPinocchio,whowasburningupwiththirst.
