Assoonastheyenteredthetown,Pinocchionoticedthatallthestreetswerefilledwithhairlessdogs,yawningfromhunger; withshearedsheep,tremblingwithcold;withcomblesschickens,beggingforagrainofwheat;withlargebutterflies,unabletousetheirwingsbecausetheyhadsoldalltheirlovelycolors; withtaillesspeacocks,ashamedtoshowthemselves;andwithbedraggledpheasants,scuttlingawayhurriedly,grievingfortheirbrightfeathersofgoldandsilver,losttothemforever.
Throughthiscrowdofpaupersandbeggars,abeautifulcoachpassednowandagain.WithinitsateitheraFox,aHawk,oraVulture.
"WhereistheFieldofWonders?"askedPinocchio,growingtiredofwaiting.
