WithOctoberhadcomethetimeforholdingthegreatFairwhichwascelebratedeveryfiveyearsatNottinghamTown,towhichfolkcamefromfarandnearthroughoutthecountry.Atsuchtimesarcherywasalwaysthemainsportoftheday,fortheNottinghamshireyeomenwerethebesthandatthelongbowinallmerryEngland,butthisyeartheSheriffhesitatedalongtimebeforeheissuedproclamationoftheFair,fearinglestRobinHoodandhisbandmightcometoit.AtfirsthehadagreatpartofamindnottoproclaimtheFair,butsecondthoughttoldhimthatmenwouldlaughathimandsayamongthemselvesthathewasafraidofRobinHood,soheputthatthoughtby.Atlasthefixedinhismindthathewouldoffersuchaprizeastheywouldnotcaretoshootfor.Atsuchtimesithadbeenthecustomtoofferahalfscoreofmarksoratunofale,sothisyearheproclaimedthataprizeoftwofatsteersshouldbegiventothebestbowman.
