           Onefineday,notlongafterLittleJohnhadleftabidingwiththeSheriffandhadcomeback,withhisworship’scook,tothemerrygreenwood,ashasjustbeentold,RobinHoodandafewchosenfellowsofhisbandlayuponthesoftswardbeneaththegreenwoodtreewheretheydwelled.Thedaywaswarmandsultry,sothatwhilemostofthebandwerescatteredthroughtheforestuponthismissionanduponthat,thesefewstoutfellowslaylazilybeneaththeshadeofthetree,inthesoftafternoon,passingjestsamongthemselvesandtellingmerrystories,withlaughterandmirth.

           AlltheairwasladenwiththebitterfragranceoftheMay,andalltheboskyshadesofthewoodlandsbeyondrangwiththesweetsongofbirdsthethrostlecock,thecuckoo,andthewoodpigeonandwiththesongofbirdsmingledthecoolsoundofthegurglingbrookthatleapedoutoftheforestshades,andranfrettingamiditsrough,graystonesacrossthesunlitopengladebeforethetrystingtree.Andafairsightwasthathalfscoreoftall,stoutyeomen,allcladinLincolngreen,lyingbeneaththebroad-spreadingbranchesofthegreatoaktree,amidthequiveringleavesofwhichthesunlightshiveredandfellindancingpatchesuponthegrass.
