           ThefirstnighttheytookuptheirinnatNottinghamTown,yettheydidnotgotopaytheirdutytotheSheriff,forhisworshipboremanyabittergrudgeagainstRobinHood,whichgrudgeshadnotbeenlessenedbyRobin’sriseintheworld.Thenextdayatanearlyhourtheymountedtheirhorsesandsetforthforthewoodlands.AstheypassedalongtheroaditseemedtoRobinthathekneweverystickandstonethathiseyeslookedupon.Yonderwasapaththathehadofttimestrodofamellowevening,withLittleJohnbesidehim;herewasone,nownighchokedwithbrambles,alongwhichheandalittlebandhadwalkedwhentheywentforthtoseekacertaincurtalfriar.

           Thustheyrodeslowlyonward,talkingabouttheseold,familiarthings;oldandyetnew,fortheyfoundmoreinthemthantheyhadeverthoughtofbefore.Thusatlasttheycametotheopenglade,andthebroad,wide-spreadinggreenwoodtreewhichwastheirhomeforsomanyyears.Neitherofthetwospokewhentheystoodbeneaththattree.Robinlookedallabouthimatthewell-knownthings,solikewhattheyusedtobeandyetsodifferent;for,whereoncewasthebustleofmanybusyfellowswasnowthequietnessofsolitude;and,ashelooked,thewoodlands,thegreensward,andtheskyallblurredtogetherinhissightthroughsalttears,forsuchagreatyearningcameuponhimashelookedonthesethings(aswellknowntohimasthefingersofhisrighthand)thathecouldnotkeepbackthewaterfromhiseyes.
