           SoRobin,withalltheemptyroadtohimself,strodealongwhistlingmerrily,hisbagsandpouchesbobbinganddanglingathisthighs.Atlasthecametowherealittlegrass-grownpathlefttheroadand,passingthroughastileanddownahill,ledintoalittledellandonacrossarillinthevalleyandupthehillontheotherside,tillitreachedawindmillthatstoodonthecapoftherisewherethewindbentthetreesinswayingmotion.Robinlookedatthespotandlikedit,and,fornoreasonbutthathisfancyledhim,hetookthelittlepathandwalkeddownthegrassysunnyslopeoftheopenmeadow,andsocametothelittledingleand,ereheknewit,uponfourlustyfellowsthatsatwithlegsoutstretchedaroundagoodlyfeastspreadupontheground.

           Fourmerrybeggarswerethey,andeachhadslungabouthisneckalittleboardthatresteduponhisbreast.Oneboardhadwrittenuponit,"Iamblind,"another,"Iamdeaf,"another,"Iamdumb,"andthefourth,"Pitythelameone."Butalthoughallthesetroubleswrittenupontheboardsseemedsogrievous,thefourstoutfellowssataroundfeastingasmerrilyasthoughCain’swifehadneveropenedthepottlethatheldmisfortunesandletthemforthlikeacloudoffliestopesterus.

           ThedeafmanwasthefirsttohearRobin,forhesaid,"Hark,brothers,Ihearsomeonecoming."Andtheblindmanwasthefirsttoseehim,forhesaid,"Heisanhonestman,brothers,andoneoflikecrafttoourselves.
