Robin Hood and the Tinker

           Thenhecalledupamessengerinwhomheplacedgreattrust,andbadehimsaddlehishorseandmakereadytogotoLincolnTowntoseewhetherhecouldfindanyonetherethatwoulddohisbiddingandwinthereward.Sothatsamemorningthemessengerstartedforthuponhiserrand.

           BrightshonethesunuponthedustyhighwaythatledfromNottinghamtoLincoln,stretchingawayallwhiteoverhillanddale.Dustywasthehighwayanddustythethroatofthemessenger,sothathisheartwasgladwhenhesawbeforehimtheSignoftheBlueBoarInn,whensomewhatmorethanhalfhisjourneywasdone.Theinnlookedfairtohiseyes,andtheshadeoftheoaktreesthatstoodarounditseemedcoolandpleasant,sohealightedfromhishorsetoresthimselfforatime,callingforapotofaletorefreshhisthirstythroat.

           Therehesawapartyofrightjovialfellowsseatedbeneaththespreadingoakthatshadedthegreenswardinfrontofthedoor.Therewasatinker,twobarefootfriars,andapartyofsixoftheKing’sforestersallcladinLincolngreen,andallofthemwerequaffinghummingaleandsingingmerryballadsofthegoodoldtimes.Loudlaughedtheforesters,asjestswerebandiedaboutbetweenthesinging,andlouderlaughedthefriars,fortheywerelustymenwithbeardsthatcurledlikethewoolofblackrams;butloudestofalllaughedtheTinker,andhesangmoresweetlythananyoftherest.Hisbagandhishammerhunguponatwigoftheoaktree,andnearbyleanedhisgoodstoutcudgel,asthickashiswristandknottedattheend.

           "Come,"criedoneoftheforesterstothetiredmessenger,"comejoinusforthisshot.Ho,landlord!Bringafreshpotofaleforeachman."

           Themessengerwasgladenoughtositdownalongwiththeotherswhowerethere,forhislimbswerewearyandthealewasgood.
