           Infrontofthem,overbeyondthehedge,thedustyroadstretchedawayacrosstheplain;behindthemthemeadowlandsandbrightgreenfieldsoftenderyoungcornlaybroadlyinthesun,andoverheadspreadtheshadeofthecool,rustlingleavesofthebeechentree.Pleasantlytotheirnostrilscamethetenderfragranceofthepurplevioletsandwildthymethatgrewwithinthedewymoistureoftheedgeofthelittlefountain,andpleasantlycamethesoftgurgleofthewater.AllwassopleasantandsofullofthegentlejoyofthebrightMaytime,thatforalongtimenooneofthethreecaredtospeak,buteachlayonhisback,gazingupthroughthetremblingleavesofthetreestothebrightskyoverhead.Atlast,Robin,whosethoughtswerenotquitesobusywool-gatheringasthoseoftheothers,andwhohadbeengazingaroundhimnowandthen,brokethesilence.
