           AtlastLittleJohnstrucklikeaflash,and"rap!"theTannermettheblowandturneditaside,andthensmotebackatLittleJohn,whoalsoturnedtheblow;andsothismightybattlebegan.Thenupanddownandbackandforththeytrod,theblowsfallingsothickandfastthat,atadistance,onewouldhavethoughtthathalfascoreofmenwerefighting.Thustheyfoughtfornighahalfanhour,untilthegroundwasallplowedupwiththediggingoftheirheels,andtheirbreathinggrewlaboredliketheoxinthefurrow.ButLittleJohnsufferedthemost,forhehadbecomeunusedtosuchstifflabor,andhisjointswerenotassuppleastheyhadbeenbeforehewenttodwellwiththeSheriff.

           AllthistimeRobinHoodlaybeneaththebush,rejoicingatsuchacomelyboutofquarterstaff."Bymyfaith!"quothhetohimself,"neverhadIthoughttoseeLittleJohnsoevenlymatchedinallmylife.Belike,though,hewouldhaveovercomeyonfellowbeforethishadhebeeninhisformertrim."

           AtlastLittleJohnsawhischance,and,throwingallthestrengthhefeltgoingfromhimintooneblowthatmighthavefelledanox,hestruckattheTannerwithmightandmain.AndnowdidtheTanner’scowhidecapstandhimingoodstead,andbutforithemightneverhaveheldstaffinhandagain.Asitwas,theblowhecaughtbesidetheheadwassoshrewdthatitsenthimstaggeringacrossthelittleglade,sothat,ifLittleJohnhadhadthestrengthtofollowuphisvantage,itwouldhavebeenillforstoutArthur.
