Themuffledbeatoftomtomswasnowfaintlyaudiblefar,farahead;andacurdlingshriekcameatinfrequentintervalswhenthewindshifted. Areddishglare,too,seemedtofilterthroughpaleundergrowthbeyondtheendlessavenuesofforestnight.Reluctanteventobeleftaloneagain,eachoneofthecowedsquattersrefusedpoint-blanktoadvanceanotherinchtowardthesceneofunholyworship,soInspectorLegrasseandhisnineteencolleaguesplungedonunguidedintoblackarcadesofhorrorthatnoneofthemhadevertrodbefore.
Theregionnowenteredbythepolicewasoneoftraditionallyevilrepute,substantiallyunknownanduntraversedbywhitemen. Therewerelegendsofahiddenlakeunglimpsedbymortalsight,inwhichdweltahuge,formlesswhitepolypousthingwithluminouseyes; andsquatterswhisperedthatbatwingeddevilsflewupoutofcavernsininnerearthtoworshipitatmidnight.
