Thenthemen,havingreachedaspotwherethetreeswerethinner,camesuddenlyinsightofthespectacleitself. Fourofthemreeled,onefainted,andtwowereshakenintoafranticcrywhichthemadcacophonyoftheorgyfortunatelydeadened. Legrassedashedswampwateronthefaceofthefaintingman,andallstoodtremblingandnearlyhypnotisedwithhorror.
Inanaturalgladeoftheswampstoodagrassyislandofperhapsanacre’sextent,clearoftreesandtolerablydry.
