           Andnow,inresponsetoageneralandurgentdemand,InspectorLegrasserelatedasfullyaspossiblehisexperiencewiththeswampworshippers; tellingastorytowhichIcouldseemyuncleattachedprofoundsignificance. Itsavouredofthewildestdreamsofmythmakerandtheosophist,anddisclosedanastonishingdegreeofcosmicimaginationamongsuchhalf-castesandpariahsasmightbeleastexpectedtopossessit. 

           OnNovember1st,1907,therehadcometotheNewOrleanspoliceafranticsummonsfromtheswampandlagooncountrytothesouth. Thesquattersthere,mostlyprimitivebutgood-natureddescendantsofLafitte’smen,wereinthegripofstarkterrorfromanunknownthingwhichhadstolenupontheminthenight. Itwasvoodoo,apparently,butvoodooofamoreterriblesortthantheyhadeverknown; andsomeoftheirwomenandchildrenhaddisappearedsincethemalevolenttom-tomhadbegunitsincessantbeatingfarwithintheblackhauntedwoodswherenodwellerventured.
