ThatherlittleTarzancoulddestroyagreatbullgorillasheknewtobeimprobable,andso,asshenearedthespotfromwhichthesoundsofthestrugglehadcome,shemovedmorewarilyandatlastslowlyandwithextremecautionshetraversedthelowestbranches,peeringeagerlyintothemoon-splashedblacknessforasignofthecombatants.
Presentlyshecameuponthem,lyinginalittleopenspacefullunderthebrilliantlightofthemoon—littleTarzan’stornandbloodyform,andbesideitagreatbullgorilla,stonedead.
WithalowcryKalarushedtoTarzan’sside,andgatheringthepoor,blood-coveredbodytoherbreast,listenedforasignoflife.Faintlysheheardit—theweakbeatingofthelittleheart.
