Theboats,andtrains,andcowsandhorseswerequitemeaninglesstohim,butnotquitesobafflingastheoddlittlefigureswhichappearedbeneathandbetweenthecoloredpictures—somestrangekindofbughethoughttheymightbe,formanyofthemhadlegsthoughnowherecouldhefindonewitheyesandamouth.Itwashisfirstintroductiontothelettersofthealphabet,andhewasovertenyearsold.
Ofcoursehehadneverbeforeseenprint,oreverhadspokenwithanylivingthingwhichhadtheremotestideathatsuchathingasawrittenlanguageexisted,noreverhadheseenanyonereading.
Sowhatwonderthatthelittleboywasquiteatalosstoguessthemeaningofthesestrangefigures.

Oh,itwasmostengrossing!Neverbeforeinallhistenyearshadheenjoyedanythingsomuch.Soabsorbedwashethathedidnotnotetheapproachingdusk,untilitwasquiteuponhimandthefigureswereblurred.
