TwomonthsaftertheyweighedanchorandclearedfromtheportofFreetownahalfdozenBritishwarvesselswerescouringthesouthAtlanticfortraceofthemortheirlittlevessel,anditwasalmostimmediatelythatthewreckagewasfoundupontheshoresofSt.HelenawhichconvincedtheworldthattheFuwaldahadgonedownwithallonboard,andhencethesearchwasstoppedereithadscarcebegun;thoughhopelingeredinlongingheartsformanyyears.
TheFuwalda,abarkentineofaboutonehundredtons,wasavesselofthetypeoftenseenincoastwisetradeinthefarsouthernAtlantic,theircrewscomposedoftheoffscouringsofthesea—unhangedmurderersandcutthroatsofeveryraceandeverynation.
TheFuwaldawasnoexceptiontotherule.Herofficerswereswarthybullies,hatingandhatedbytheircrew.Thecaptain,whileacompetentseaman,wasabruteinhistreatmentofhismen.
