Here,onthisbranch,acaterpillarhasbeencrushedbythefugitive’sgreatfoot,andTarzanknowsinstinctivelywherethatsamefootwouldtouchinthenextstride.Herehelookstofindatinyparticleofthedemolishedlarva,ofttimesnotmorethanaspeckofmoisture.
Again,aminutebitofbarkhasbeenupturnedbythescrapinghand,andthedirectionofthebreakindicatesthedirectionofthepassage.Orsomegreatlimb,orthestemofthetreeitselfhasbeenbrushedbythehairybody,andatinyshredofhairtellshimbythedirectionfromwhichitiswedgedbeneaththebarkthatheisontherighttrail.
Nordoesheneedtocheckhisspeedtocatchtheseseeminglyfaintrecordsofthefleeingbeast.
ToTarzantheystandoutboldlyagainstallthemyriadotherscarsandbruisesandsignsupontheleafyway.Butstrongestofallisthescent,forTarzanispursuingupthewind,andhistrainednostrilsareassensitiveasahound’s.
