Icarefullysavedtheearsofthiscorn,youmaybesure,intheirseason,whichwasabouttheendofJune; andlayingupeverycorn,Iresolvedtosowthemallagain,hopingintimetohavesomequantitysufficienttosupplymewithbread. ButitwasnottillthefourthyearthatIcouldallowmyselftheleastgrainofthiscorntoeat,andeventhenbutsparingly,asIshallsayafterwardsinitsorder; forIlostallthatIsowedthefirstseason,bynotobservingthepropertime; forIsoweditjustbeforethedryseason,sothatitnevercameupatall,atleastnotasitwouldhavedone;ofwhichinitsplace.
Besidesthisbarley,therewas,asabove,twentyorthirtystalksofrice,whichIpreservedwiththesamecare,andwhoseusewasofthesamekind,ortothesamepurpose,viz.,tomakemebread,orratherfood; forIfoundwaystocookitupwithoutbaking,thoughIdidthatalsoaftersometime. Buttoreturntomyjournal.
Iworkedexcessivehardthesethreeorfourmonthstogetmywalldone; andthe14thofAprilIcloseditup,contrivingtogointoit,notbyadoor,butoverthewallbyaladder,thattheremightbenosignintheoutsideofmyhabitation.
April16. —Ifinishedtheladder,soIwentupwiththeladdertothetop,andthenpulleditupafterme,andletitdownontheinside. Thiswasacompleteenclosuretome; forwithinIhadroomenough,andnothingcouldcomeatmefromwithout,unlessitcouldfirstmountmywall.
Theverynextdayafterthiswallwasfinished,Ihadalmosthadallmylaboroverthrownatonce,andmyselfkilled.
