AfterIhadbeenthereabouttenortwelvedaysitcameintomythoughtsthatIshouldlosemyreckoningoftimeforwantofbooksandpenandink,andshouldevenforgettheSabbathdaysfromtheworkingdays; buttopreventthis,Icutitwithmyknifeuponalargepost,incapitalletters; andmakingitintoagreatcross,IsetitupontheshorewhereIfirstlanded,viz.,"Icameonshoreherethe30thofSeptember1659." UponthesidesofthissquarepostIcuteverydayanotchwithmyknife,andeveryseventhnotchwasaslongagainastherest, andeveryfirstdayofthemonthaslongagainasthatlongone; andthusIkeptmycalendar,orweekly,monthly,andyearlyreckoningoftime.
InthenextplacewearetoobservethatamongthemanythingswhichIbroughtoutoftheshipintheseveralvoyages,which,asabovementioned,Imadetoit,Igotseveralthingsoflessvalue,butnotalllessusefultome,whichIomittedsettingdownbefore;
