Thatwhichwasourpresentcomfort,andallthecomfortwehad,wasthat,contrarytoourexpectation,theshipdidnotbreakyet,andthatthemastersaidthewindbegantoabate.
Now,thoughwethoughtthatthewinddidalittleabate,yettheshiphavingthusstruckuponthesand,andstickingtoofastforustoexpecthergettingoff,wewereinadreadfulconditionindeed,andhadnothingtodobuttothinkofsavingourlivesaswellaswecould. Wehadaboatatoursternjustbeforethestorm,butshewasfirststavedbydashingagainsttheship’srudder,andinthenextplace,shebrokeaway,andeithersunk,orwasdrivenofftosea, sotherewasnohopefromher; wehadanotherboatonboard,buthowtogetheroffintothesea,wasadoubtfulthing. However,therewasnoroomtodebate,forwefanciedtheshipwouldbreaktopieceseveryminute,andsometoldusshewasactuallybrokenalready.
