Wehadonedangerousplacetopass,whichourguidetoldusiftherewereanymorewolvesinthecountryweshouldfindthemthere; andthiswasinasmallplain,surroundedwithwoodsoneveryside,andalongnarrowdefile,orlane,whichweweretopasstogetthroughthewood,andthenweshouldcometothevillagewhereweweretolodge.
Itwaswithinhalfanhourofsunsetwhenweenteredthefirstwood,andalittleaftersunsetwhenwecameintotheplain. Wemetwithnothinginthefirstwood,exceptthat,inalittleplainwithinthewood,whichwasnotabovetwofurlongsover,wesawfivegreatwolvescrosstheroad,fullspeed,oneafteranother,asiftheyhadbeeninchaseofsomeprey,andhaditinview; theytooknonoticeofus,andweregoneandoutofoursightinafewmoments. Uponthisourguide,who,bytheway,wasawretchedfaintheartedfellow,biduskeepinareadyposture,forhebelievedthereweremorewolvesa-coming.
Wekeptourarmsready,andoureyesaboutus;butwesawnomorewolvestillwecamethroughthatwood,whichwasnearhalfaleague,andenteredtheplain. Assoonaswecameintotheplain,wehadoccasionenoughtolookaboutus. Thefirstobjectwemetwithwasadeadhorse,thatistosay,apoorhorsewhichthewolveshadkilled,andatleastadozenofthematwork; wecouldnotsayeatingofhim,butpickingofhisbonesrather,fortheyhadeatenupallthefleshbefore.
