WestayednolessthantwentydaysatPampeluna;whenseeingthewintercomingon,andnolikelihoodofitsbeingbetter,foritwastheseverestwinteralloverEuropethathadbeenknowninthememoryofman,IproposedthatweshouldallgoawaytoFontarabia,andtheretakeshippingforwhichwasaverylittlevoyage.
Butwhilewewereconsideringthis,therecameinfourFrenchgentlemen,whohavingbeenstoppedontheFrenchsideofthepasses,aswewereontheSpanish,hadfoundoutaguide,who,traversingthecountryneartheheadofLanguedoc,hadbroughtthemoverthemountainsbysuchwaysthattheywerenotmuchincommodedbythesnow; andweretheymetwithsnowinanyquantity,theysaiditwasfrozenhardenoughtobearthemandtheirhorses.
