Thesevenmencameonshore,andthethreewhoremainedintheboatputherofftoagooddistancefromtheshore,andcametoananchortowaitforthem;sothatitwasimpossibleforustocomeatthemintheboat.
Thosethatcameonshorekeptclosetogether,marchingtowardsthetopofthelittlehillunderwhichmyhabitationlay; andwecouldseethemplainly,thoughtheycouldnotperceiveus. Wecouldhavebeenverygladtheywouldhavecomenearertous,sothatwemighthavefiredatthem,orthattheywouldhavegonefartheroff,thatwemighthavecomeabroad.
Butwhentheywerecometothebrowofthehill,wheretheycouldseeagreatwayintothevalleysandwoodswhichlaytowardsthenortheastpart,andwheretheislandlaylowest,theyshoutedandhallooedtilltheywereweary; andnotcaring,itseems,toventurefarfromtheshore,norfarfromoneanother,theysatdowntogetherunderatree,toconsiderofit. Hadtheythoughtfittohavegonetosleepthere,astheotherpartyofthemhaddone,theyhaddonethejobforus; buttheyweretoofullofapprehensionsofdangertoventuretogotosleep,thoughtheycouldnottellwhatthedangerwastheyhadtofearneither.
Thecaptainmadeaveryjustproposaltomeuponthisconsultationoftheirs,viz.,thatperhapstheywouldallfireavolleyagain,toendeavortomaketheirfellowshear,andthatweshouldallsallyuponthem,justatthejuncturewhentheirpieceswerealldischarged, andtheywouldcertainlyyield,andweshouldhavethemwithoutbloodshed. Ilikedtheproposal,provideditwasdonewhilewewerenearenoughtocomeuptothembeforetheycouldloadtheirpiecesagain.
