AsIhadbeenonevoyagetothiscoastbefore,IknewverywellthattheislandsoftheCanaries,andtheCapedeVerdeIslandsalso,laynotfarofffromthecoast. ButasIhadnoinstrumentstotakeanobservationtoknowwhatlatitudewewerein, andnotexactlyknowing,oratleastremembering,whatlatitudetheywerein, Iknewnotwheretolookforthem,orwhentostandofftoseatowardsthem;otherwiseImightnoweasilyhavefoundsomeoftheseislands. Butmyhopewas,thatifIstoodalongthiscoasttillIcametothatpartwheretheEnglishtraded,Ishouldfindsomeoftheirvesselsupontheirusualdesignoftrade,thatwouldrelieveandtakeusin.
Bythebestofmycalculation,thatplacewhereInowwasmustbethatcountrywhich,lyingbetweentheEmperorofMorocco’sdominionsandthenegroes,lieswasteanduninhabited,exceptbywildbeasts; thenegroeshavingabandoneditandgonefarthersouthforfearoftheMoors,andtheMoorsnotthinkingitworthinhabitingbyreasonofitsbarrenness; andindeed,bothforsakingitbecauseoftheprodigiousnumberoftigers,lions,leopards,andotherfuriouscreatureswhichharbourthere;
