Iobservedanextraordinarysenseofpleasureappearedinhisface,andhiseyessparkled,andhiscountenancediscoveredastrangeeagerness,asifhehadamindtobeinhisowncountryagain; andthisobservationofmineputagreatmanythoughtsintome,whichmademeatfirstnotsoeasyaboutmynewmanFridayasIwasbefore; andImadenodoubtbutthatifFridaycouldgetbacktohisownnationagain,hewouldnotonlyforgetallhisreligion,butallhisobligationtome; andwouldbeforwardenoughtogivehiscountrymenanaccountofme,andcomebackperhapswithahundredortwoofthem,andmakeafeastuponme,atwhichhemightbeasmerryasheusedtobewiththoseofhisenemies,whentheyweretakeninwar.
ButIwrongedthepoorhonestcreatureverymuch,forwhichIwasverysorryafterwards. However,asmyjealousyincreased,andheldmesomeweeks,Iwasalittlemorecircumspect,andnotsofamiliarandkindtohimasbefore; inwhichIwascertainlyinthewrongtoo,thehonest,gratefulcreaturehavingnothoughtaboutitbutwhatconsistedwiththebestprinciples,bothasareligiousChristianandasagratefulfriend,asappearedafterwardstomyfullsatisfaction.
Whilemyjealousyofhimlasted,youmaybesureIwaseverydaypumpinghim,toseeifhewoulddiscoveranyofthenewthoughtswhichIsuspectedwereinhim; butIfoundeverythinghesaidwassohonestandsoinnocentthatIcouldfindnothingtonourishmysuspicion; and,inspiteofallmyuneasiness,hemademeatlastentirelyhisownagain,nordidheintheleastperceivethatIwasuneasy,andthereforeIcouldnotsuspecthimofdeceit.
