Havingwaitedagoodwhile,listeningtoheariftheymadeanynoise,atlength,beginveryimpatient,Isetmygunsatthefootofmyladder,andclambereduptothetopofthehill,bymytwostages,asusual; standingso,however,thatmyheaddidnotappearabovethehill,sothattheycouldnotperceivemebyanymeans. HereIobserved,bythehelpofmyperspectiveglass,thattheywerenolessthanthirtyinnumber,thattheyhadafirekindled,thattheyhadhadmeatdressed. Howtheyhadcookedit,thatIknewnot,orwhatitwas;buttheywerealldancing,inIknownothowmanybarbarousgesturesandfigures,theirownway,roundthefire.
WhileIwasthuslookingonthem,Iperceivedbymyperspectivetwomiserablewretchesdraggedfromtheboats,where,itseems,theywerelaidby,andwerenowbroughtoutfortheslaughter. Iperceivedoneofthemimmediatelyfell,beingknockeddown,Isuppose,withacluborwoodensword,forthatwastheirway,andtwoorthreeotherswereatworkimmediately,cuttinghimopenfortheircookery,whiletheothervictimwasleftstandingbyhimself,tilltheyshouldbereadyforhim. Inthatverymomentthispoorwretchseeinghimselfalittleatliberty,Natureinspiredhimwithhopesoflife,andhestartedawayfromthem,andranwithincredibleswiftnessalongthesandsdirectlytowardsme,Imeantowardsthatpartofthecoastwheremyhabitationwas.
Iwasdreadfullyfrighted(thatImustacknowledge)whenIperceivedhimtorunmyway,andespeciallywhen,asIthought,Isawhimpursuedbythewholebody; andnowIexpectedthatpartofmydreamwascomingtopass,andthathewouldcertainlytakeshelterinmygrove; butIcouldnotdepend,byanymeans,uponmydreamfortherestofit,viz.,thattheothersavageswouldnotpursuehimthither,andfindhimthere.
