ThesethoughtssooppressedmymindthatIbegantogiveovermyenterprise; andhavinghauledmyboatintoalittlecreekontheshore,Isteppedout,andsatmedownalittlerisingbitofground,verypensiveandanxious,betweenfearanddesire,aboutmyvoyage; when,asIwasmusing,Icouldperceivethatthetidewasturned,andthefloodcomeon;uponwhichmygoingwasforsomanyhoursimpracticable. Uponthis,presentlyitoccurredtomethatIshouldgouptothehighestpieceofgroundIcouldfindandobserve,ifIcould,howthesetsofthetide,orcurrents,laywhenthefloodcamein,thatImightjudgewhether,ifIwasdrivenonewayout,Imightnotexpecttobedrivenanotherwayhome,withthesamerapidnessofthecurrents.
