Itseemedevidenttomethatthevisitswhichtheythusmadetothisislandarenotveryfrequent,foritwasabovefifteenmonthsbeforeanymoreofthemcameonshorethereagain; thatistosay,Ineithersawthem,oranyfootstepsorsignalsofthem,inallthattime; for,astotherainyseasons,thentheyaresurenottocomeabroad,atleastnotsofar. YetallthiswhileIliveduncomfortablybyreasonoftheconstantapprehensionsIwasinoftheircominguponmebysurprise; fromwhenceIobserve,thattheexpectationofevilismorebitterthanthesuffering,especiallyifthereisnoroomtoshakeoffthatexpectation,orthoseapprehensions.
DuringallthistimeIwasinthemurderinghumor,andtookupmostofmyhours,whichshouldhavebeenbetteremployed,incontrivinghowtocircumventandfalluponthemtheverynexttimeIshouldseethem; especiallyiftheyshouldbedivided,astheywerethelasttime,intotwoparties. NordidIconsideratallthatifIkilledoneparty,supposeoftenoradozen,Iwasstillthenextday,orweek,ormonth,tokillanother,andsoanother,evenadinfinitum,tillIshouldbeatlengthnolessamurdererthantheywereinbeingman-eaters,andperhapsmoreso.
