Butnowwhen,asIhavesaid,IbegantobewearyofthefruitlessexcursionwhichIhadmadesolongandsofareverymorninginvain,somyopinionoftheactionitselfbegantoalter; andIbegan,withcoolerandcalmerthoughts,toconsiderwhatitwasIwasgoingtoengagein. WhatauthorityorcallIhadtopretendtobejudgeandexecutioneruponthesemenascriminals,whomHeavenhadthoughtfit,forsomanyages,tosuffer,unpunished,togoon,andtobe,asitwere,theexecutionersofHisjudgmentsoneuponanother. Howfarthesepeoplewereoffendersagainstme,andwhatrightIhadtoengageinthequarrelofthatbloodwhichtheyshedpromiscuouslyoneuponanother. Idebatedthisveryoftenwithmyself,thus: HowdoIknowwhatGodHimselfjudgesinthisparticularcase? Itiscertainthesepeopleeitherdonotcommitthisasacrime; itisnotagainsttheirownconsciences’reproving,ortheirlightreproachingthem.
