Whetheritwasaboatornot,Idonotknow;butasIdescendedfromthehill,Icouldseenomoreofit,soIgaveitover; onlyIresolvedtogonomoreoutwithoutaprospectiveglassinmypocket.
WhenIwascomedownthehilltotheendoftheisland,where,indeed,Ihadneverbeenbefore,Iwaspresentlyconvincedthattheseeingtheprintofaman’sfootwasnotsuchastrangethingintheislandasIimagined. And,butthatitwasaspecialprovidencethatIwascastuponthesideoftheislandwherethesavagesnevercame,Ishouldeasilyhaveknownthatnothingwasmorefrequentthanforthecanoesfromthemain,whentheyhappenedtobealittletoofaroutatsea,toshootovertothatsideoftheislandforharbor; likewise,astheyoftenmetandfoughtintheircanoes,thevictorshavingtakenanyprisonerswouldbringthemovertothisshore,whereaccordingtotheirdreadfulcustoms,beingallcannibals,theywouldkillandeatthem; ofwhichhereafter.
WhenIwascomedownthehilltotheshore,asIsaidabove,beingtheSW.pointoftheisland,Iwasperfectlyconfoundedandamazed; norisitpossibleformetoexpressthehorrorofmymindatseeingtheshorespreadwithskulls,hands,feet,andotherbonesofhumanbodies;
