           Iletitdown,andshookitout,andwentuptotheglassuponthedressing-table.Therewasalittlemuslincurtaindrawnacrossit.IdrewitbackandstoodforamomentlookingthroughsuchaveilofmyownhairthatIcouldseenothingelse.ThenIputmyhairasideandlookedatthereflectioninthemirror,encouragedbyseeinghowplacidlyitlookedatme.Iwasverymuchchangedoh,very,verymuch.AtfirstmyfacewassostrangetomethatIthinkIshouldhaveputmyhandsbeforeitandstartedbackbutfortheencouragementIhavementioned.Verysoonitbecamemorefamiliar,andthenIknewtheextentofthealterationinitbetterthanIhaddoneatfirst.ItwasnotlikewhatIhadexpected,butIhadexpectednothingdefinite,andIdaresayanythingdefinitewouldhavesurprisedme.Ihadneverbeenabeautyandhadneverthoughtmyselfone,butIhadbeenverydifferentfromthis.Itwasallgonenow.HeavenwassogoodtomethatIcouldletitgowithafewnotbittertearsandcouldstandtherearrangingmyhairforthenightquitethankfully.Onethingtroubledme,andIconsidereditforalongtimebeforeIwenttosleep.IhadkeptMr.Woodcourt’sflowers.WhentheywerewitheredIhaddriedthemandputtheminabookthatIwasfondof.Nobodyknewthis,notevenAda.IwasdoubtfulwhetherIhadarighttopreservewhathehadsenttoonesodifferentwhetheritwasgeneroustowardshimtodoit.Iwishedtobegeneroustohim,eveninthesecretdepthsofmyheart,whichhewouldneverknow,becauseIcouldhavelovedhimcouldhavebeendevotedtohim.
