FirstCaddydeclared(andwouldatfirstdeclarenothingelse)thatIwasthebestadviserthateverwasknown.This,mypetsaid,wasnonewsatall;andthis,Isaid,ofcourse,wasnonsense.ThenCaddytoldusthatshewasgoingtobemarriedinamonthandthatifAdaandIwouldbeherbridesmaids,shewasthehappiestgirlintheworld.Tobesure,thiswasnewsindeed;andIthoughtwenevershouldhavedonetalkingaboutit,wehadsomuchtosaytoCaddy,andCaddyhadsomuchtosaytous.ItseemedthatCaddy’sunfortunatepapahadgotoverhisbankruptcy—"gonethroughtheGazette,"wastheexpressionCaddyused,asifitwereatunnel—withthegeneralclemencyandcommiserationofhiscreditors,andhadgotridofhisaffairsinsomeblessedmannerwithoutsucceedinginunderstandingthem,andhadgivenupeverythinghepossessed(whichwasnotworthmuch,Ishouldthink,tojudgefromthestateofthefurniture),andhadsatisfiedeveryoneconcernedthathecoulddonomore,poorman.So,hehadbeenhonourablydismissedto"theoffice"tobegintheworldagain.Whathedidattheoffice,Ineverknew;Caddysaidhewasa"custom-houseandgeneralagent,"andtheonlythingIeverunderstoodaboutthatbusinesswasthatwhenhewantedmoneymorethanusualhewenttothedockstolookforit,andhardlyeverfoundit.
