Whenwehadbeentherehalfanhourorso,thecaseinprogress—ifImayuseaphrasesoridiculousinsuchaconnexion—seemedtodieoutofitsownvapidity,withoutcoming,orbeingbyanybodyexpectedtocome,toanyresult.TheLordChancellorthenthrewdownabundleofpapersfromhisdesktothegentlemenbelowhim,andsomebodysaid,"JarndyceandJarndyce."Uponthistherewasabuzz,andalaugh,andageneralwithdrawalofthebystanders,andabringinginofgreatheaps,andpiles,andbagsandbagsfullofpapers.Ithinkitcameon"forfurtherdirections"—aboutsomebillofcosts,tothebestofmyunderstanding,whichwasconfusedenough.ButIcountedtwenty-threegentlemeninwigswhosaidtheywere"init,"andnoneofthemappearedtounderstanditmuchbetterthanI.TheychattedaboutitwiththeLordChancellor,andcontradictedandexplainedamongthemselves,andsomeofthemsaiditwasthisway,andsomeofthemsaiditwasthatway,andsomeofthemjocoselyproposedtoreadhugevolumesofaffidavits,andtherewasmorebuzzingandlaughing,andeverybodyconcernedwasinastateofidleentertainment,andnothingcouldbemadeofitbyanybody.Afteranhourorsoofthis,andagoodmanyspeechesbeingbegunandcutshort,itwas"referredbackforthepresent,"asMr.Kengesaid,andthepaperswerebundledupagainbeforetheclerkshadfinishedbringingthemin.IglancedatRichardontheterminationofthesehopelessproceedingsandwasshockedtoseethewornlookofhishandsomeyoungface."Itcan’tlastforever,DameDurden.Betterlucknexttime!"wasallhesaid.
