Beingthere,ismuchdelightedwiththehorsesandthefeatsofstrength;looksattheweaponswithacriticaleye;disapprovesofthecombatsasgivingevidencesofunskilfulswordsmanship;butistouchedhomebythesentiments.Inthelastscene,whentheEmperorofTartarygetsupintoacartandcondescendstoblesstheunitedloversbyhoveringoverthemwiththeUnionJack,hiseyelashesaremoistenedwithemotion.Thetheatreover,Mr.GeorgecomesacrossthewateragainandmakeshiswaytothatcuriousregionlyingabouttheHaymarketandLeicesterSquarewhichisacentreofattractiontoindifferentforeignhotelsandindifferentforeigners,racket-courts,fighting-men,swordsmen,footguards,oldchina,gaming-houses,exhibitions,andalargemedleyofshabbinessandshrinkingoutofsight.Penetratingtotheheartofthisregion,hearrivesbyacourtandalongwhitewashedpassageatagreatbrickbuildingcomposedofbarewalls,floors,roof-rafters,andskylights,onthefrontofwhich,ifitcanbesaidtohaveanyfront,ispaintedGEORGE’SSHOOTINGGALLERY,&c.IntoGeorge’sShootingGallery,&c.,hegoes;andinittherearegaslights(partlyturnedoffnow),andtwowhitenedtargetsforrifle-shooting,andarcheryaccommodation,andfencingappliances,andallnecessariesfortheBritishartofboxing.NoneofthesesportsorexercisesbeingpursuedinGeorge’sShootingGalleryto-night,whichissodevoidofcompanythatalittlegrotesquemanwithalargeheadhasitalltohimselfandliesasleepuponthefloor.
