Thereareaboutthirtycasesonrecord,ofwhichthemostfamous,thatoftheCountessCorneliadeBaudiCesenate,wasminutelyinvestigatedanddescribedbyGiuseppeBianchini,aprebendaryofVerona,otherwisedistinguishedinletters,whopublishedanaccountofitatVeronain1731,whichheafterwardsrepublishedatRome.Theappearances,beyondallrationaldoubt,observedinthatcasearetheappearancesobservedinMr.Krook’scase.ThenextmostfamousinstancehappenedatRheimssixyearsearlier,andthehistorianinthatcaseisLeCat,oneofthemostrenownedsurgeonsproducedbyFrance.Thesubjectwasawoman,whosehusbandwasignorantlyconvictedofhavingmurderedher;butonsolemnappealtoahighercourt,hewasacquittedbecauseitwasshownupontheevidencethatshehaddiedthedeathofwhichthisnameofspontaneouscombustionisgiven.Idonotthinkitnecessarytoaddtothesenotablefacts,andthatgeneralreferencetotheauthoritieswhichwillbefoundatpage30,vol.ii.,*therecordedopinionsandexperiencesofdistinguishedmedicalprofessors,French,English,andScotch,inmoremoderndays,contentingmyselfwithobservingthatIshallnotabandonthefactsuntilthereshallhavebeenaconsiderablespontaneouscombustionofthetestimonyonwhichhumanoccurrencesareusuallyreceived.**InBleakHouseIhavepurposelydweltupontheromanticsideoffamiliarthings.
