           IfIeverthoughtofthetimeIhadbeenout,itpresenteditselfasanindefiniteperiodofgreatduration,andIseemed,inastrangeway,nevertohavebeenfreefromtheanxietyunderwhichIthenlaboured.Asweadvanced,Ibegantofeelmisgivingsthatmycompanionlostconfidence.Hewasthesameasbeforewithalltheroadsidepeople,buthelookedgraverwhenhesatbyhimselfonthebox.Isawhisfingeruneasilygoingacrossandacrosshismouthduringthewholeofonelongwearystage.Ioverheardthathebegantoaskthedriversofcoachesandothervehiclescomingtowardsuswhatpassengerstheyhadseeninothercoachesandvehiclesthatwereinadvance.Theirrepliesdidnotencouragehim.Healwaysgavemeareassuringbeckofhisfingerandliftofhiseyelidashegotupontheboxagain,butheseemedperplexednowwhenhesaid,"Geton,mylad!"Atlast,whenwewerechanging,hetoldmethathehadlostthetrackofthedresssolongthathebegantobesurprised.Itwasnothing,hesaid,tolosesuchatrackforonewhile,andtotakeitupforanotherwhile,andsoon;butithaddisappearedhereinanunaccountablemanner,andwehadnotcomeuponitsince.ThiscorroboratedtheapprehensionsIhadformed,whenhebegantolookatdirection-posts,andtoleavethecarriageatcrossroadsforaquarterofanhouratatimewhileheexploredthem.ButIwasnottobedown-hearted,hetoldme,foritwasaslikelyasnotthatthenextstagemightsetusrightagain.Thenextstage,however,endedasthatoneended;wehadnonewclue.
