No!Sofarourroad,MissSummerson,isfor’ard—straightahead—andkeepingeverythingquiet!"WecalledathomeoncemorethatImightsendahastynotetomyguardian,andthenwehurriedbacktowherewehadleftthecarriage.Thehorseswerebroughtoutassoonaswewereseencoming,andwewereontheroadagaininafewminutes.Ithadsetinsnowingatdaybreak,anditnowsnowedhard.Theairwassothickwiththedarknessofthedayandthedensityofthefallthatwecouldseebutaverylittlewayinanydirection.Althoughitwasextremelycold,thesnowwasbutpartiallyfrozen,anditchurned—withasoundasifitwereabeachofsmallshells—underthehoofsofthehorsesintomireandwater.Theysometimesslippedandflounderedforamiletogether,andwewereobligedtocometoastandstilltorestthem.Onehorsefellthreetimesinthisfirststage,andtrembledsoandwassoshakenthatthedriverhadtodismountfromhissaddleandleadhimatlast.Icouldeatnothingandcouldnotsleep,andIgrewsonervousunderthosedelaysandtheslowpaceatwhichwetravelledthatIhadanunreasonabledesireuponmetogetoutandwalk.Yieldingtomycompanion’sbettersense,however,IremainedwhereIwas.
